If you have been suffering this cold winter, you are probably eagerly awaiting the arrival of spring. There is something about spring that feels like a renewal, a fresh start, a new beginning. So, why not embrace the spirit of spring and use it as an excuse to try something different, and what better way is there than to experiment with new beauty trends? It could make for a whole new, and more confident, you!
Just as fashion trends change each season, so do the trends for beauty. We’ve kept a close eye on the catwalks and picked out some of the hair and makeup trends that are set to be hot in spring 2017.
Smudged Eyeliner
You may have always been told that smudged eyeliner is a major beauty faux pas, but for spring 2017, it is the only way it should be worn. It is finally time to say goodbye to the impossible to perfect cats eye liner, and be more haphazard and imperfect with your liner application. There was so much smudge on the spring/summer 2017 catwalks: Christopher Kane went for a deep grey shadow and liner that was inspired by cigarette ash; at Balmain eye gloss was applied on top of eyeliner for a washed out smudged effect; Alberta Ferretti mixed black and brown liners for a standout smoky effect; and Giorgio Armani went for navy liner smudged over the upper lids.
Shades of black, grey, and navy are the shades that are on trend and should be smudged across either the upper or lower lids, or even both. Experiment with the trend and have some fun. Kohl eyeliners are the easiest ones to get a good smudges effect, and you don’t even need blender brush to smudge it; a damp Q-tip will do the job just as well.
Micro Plaits
Plaits and braids were still a big trend on the spring/summer 2017 catwalks, with a wide variety of styles taking center stage. Dior went for laidback plaited buns, Valentino chose some ethereal Rapunzel length braids, and Simone Rocha went for some quirky braided pigtails. There really is a plait or braid to suit every girl this upcoming season, but the standout plait style, has to be the micro plait.
Bold Blush
Blush is back in a big way for the spring 2017 season, and all subtlety has gone out the window. This season your blusher is meant to be seen, and forget bronzer, rosy pinks are the shades of choice. Kenzo had the boldest blush, with hot pink blush applied liberally around the temples and onto the cheekbones. Fenty Puma applied blush in a similar manner to Kenzo, but chose a softer pink blush, and finished off with highlighter over the cheekbones, right up to the temple. Whereas, Reem Acra went for a rosy pink blush right onto the apples of the cheek, for a healthy glow.
There is a lot of scope for experimentation with the bold blush look, so why not try out few and see which one you like best. Those gorgeous rosy cheeks will bring a glow all the way through spring.
Statement Lip
You’re probably expecting it to be the red lip, as it seems to be every season. Let’s face it the red lip is an evergreen beauty trend; it comes back season after season. And yes, the red lip is a popular shade for spring 2017, it was everywhere — we are particularly loving the matte cherry shade at Giambattista Valli. But, there are many other statement lip shades set to be big this season.
Matte tangerine lips were seen on the models at Versus and Jason Wu, with the latter going for an edgy ombre lip, having bright neon orange in the center, blending out to a orange-red in the corners. Fuschia pinks were on show at Cushnie et Ochs and Bibhu, which brought summer early to the spring catwalks. But, for something really standout lip emulate the models from Acne Studio, who walked the catwalk, with gorgeous matte grey/purple lips.
To give your lipsticks extra staying power, use a lip scrub once or twice a week to slough away any dead cells, and always apply a lip primer before your lip color.
The Glitterati
It was raining glitter on the spring 2017 catwalks, with Pat McGrath’s line being featured on many runways. Glitter came in a number of ways, from the wearable to the daring, and coming in many shades and saturations. DKNY really wowed with their deep red glitter lips and Fendi also were a standout with rose gold glitter on the lips. Maison Margiela, went for a more daring look with frosty blue glitter on the lips and in the corner of the eyes. Also, Marc Jacobs went for glitter on the lower eyelids, which brought a real sparkle to the eye.
So if you need a tip for what you should add to your makeup bag in 2017, invest in some Pat McGrath.
Other beauty trends that are set to be big in spring 2017 includes: pops of color on the upper lids, glowing and dewy skin, bowl style and shaggy bob haircuts, and slick side parting. What beauty trends are you looking forward to trying?
